By Keep Fit and Moving Team | In Exercise, Senior Exercise | on September 23, 2016

Preventing an older adult from falling is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our mom, dad, grandparent or friend. Nobody wants to fall. However, there are preventable steps which family, friends and caregivers can put in place to prevent falls. Once you know the fall risk factors, then the rest is easy–implementation.

Personal service is our gift to others. It is our way to tell those close to us “Thank You”. Thank you for all that you have been to me and for all that you have provided for me over the years. Love is spelled-TIME, and that is what we can offer with our resources to preventing a fall.

Just think about it, it’s a win/win situation. First step, spend time with an older adult and offer assistance to their daily routine, planning their schedule. Secondly, provide some basic home exercises and home modifications, such as in the bathroom with grab bars. Thirdly, assist with medication and visual check ups with their physician and follow up. Encourage socialization with friends and allow them to share what they have learned on how to prevent falls to their peers.

Think of the positive results. A healthier, happier and more independent senior whom now can now take personal responsiblity for their health. Not to mention, the influence they will have in reducing the annual $29.2 billion spent on healthcare. Also, now they can stay out of the emergeny room, with no hospital stays, no home health visits and no physician visits.
